Documents Needed to Get Married in Italy from UK

Published on: 1 June 2026

This is the technical guide for UK couples who want to understand the documents needed to get married in Italy from UK. It is designed as the detailed companion to our main article, How to Get Legally Married in Italy from UK, where we explain the overall legal wedding journey and how SPAO supports British couples planning a destination wedding in Umbria.

Here, the focus is more specific: Certificate of No Impediment, statutory declaration, apostille, translations, Comune requirements, timing, different residence cases, and the official authorities involved.

British citizens can legally get married in Italy, but the marriage file must be prepared with the correct documents, legalisations, translations, and Comune-specific requirements. For most British citizens, the key document is the Certificate of No Impediment, commonly called CNI. In the Italian context, this document is often associated with the concept of nulla osta, because it confirms that there is no known legal impediment to the marriage.

However, the CNI is not usually the only document required. UK couples should also expect to prepare a bilingual statutory declaration, obtain an apostille from the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office where required, arrange Italian translations if requested by the Comune, and submit the complete file to the Italian civil registry office before the wedding.
